You’re brilliant at recycling kitchen waste. But what happens when you get to the bathroom?
To one perfume bottle, it smells like a missed opportunity.
If I were a milk carton or an empty fish finger box, you’d recycle me wouldn’t you? But something happens when most people get to the bathroom. Bathroom products are far less likely to be recycled than kitchen ones, even though we’re made of much the same stuff.
True, I smell a lot sweeter than your average fish finger carton, but still…
So next time you’re in the shower thinking of all the things you need to do today, just add one small thing to the list. Do a 30 second bathroom blitz and give your home’s recycling one big burst of energy.

So which products are most likely to be left out of the recycling?
- Perfume and aftershave bottles: Maybe it’s because our bottles are so gorgeous, but something stops many people from recycling us. If you’re planning to reuse us that’s fine – in fact, it’s better than recycling – but if not, put us in the pink sack with the rest of the glass
- Deodorants & body sprays: You know, if everyone in the UK recycled just one extra aluminium deodorant can each year, the energy we’d save would be enough to vacuum almost half a million homes for a year. It’s not just deodorants either – any aerosol should be recyclable. Pink sack again please.
- Tissue and toothpaste boxes: Many people remember to recycle the cardboard bit of the loo roll, but somehow most toothpaste boxes end up in general waste. If everyone recycled just one toothpaste box a year it would save enough energy to power the fridges in 2,000 homes. So drop yours in the blue paper and card box now.
- Bleach, cleaners, shampoo and shower gel bottles: They’re designed to leave you or your home looking and smelling sweet, so let’s make sure the way you recycle them doesn’t leave a nasty whiff. Remember, plastic bottles go in the pink sack unless they are a trigger or pump dispenser – in which case, black refuse sack please!
Do the blitz
It only takes a few seconds to make a big difference. To make life easier, put a couple of small bags or bins in the bathroom – one for cardboard, one for glass, metal and plastic, so you don’t have to juggle armloads of ‘stuff’ you when you do your blitz. If you have children, make a game of it and get them into the recycling habit too.
Doing your bit to save the planet means more than just focusing on the kitchen. So get the bathroom involved too and double your impact.
